Body Contouring After Weight Loss

Body contouring after weight loss involves removing excess skin and pockets of fat, and reshaping the body following significant weight loss achieved through diet and exercise, weight loss medications (GLP-1s), bariatric surgery, or a combination. After weight loss, the skin often loses elasticity and cannot contract fully on its own, leaving folds and loose tissue on the abdomen, back, arms, thighs, and chest. Who Needs It

In general, candidates for post-weight loss plastic surgery have lost a significant amount of weight and meet the following criteria:

  • Are in good health
  • Do not smoke or are willing to quit before and after surgery
  • Have been at or near their goal weight for at least 6 months
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or lower
  • Have realistic expectations about recovery, results, and scarring

Post-Weight Loss Body Contouring Procedure Options

Body contouring after weight loss typically involves a customized plan that addresses multiple areas, either in a single surgery or a staged series of procedures. Our surgeons work with each patient to identify the areas of greatest concern, assess surgical safety, and sequence procedures in the order that makes the most sense for cosmetic goals, health, and recovery.

Extended Abdominoplasty / Lower Body Lift

An extended abdominoplasty continues the standard tummy tuck around to the flanks and lower back. When the incision is carried all the way around the body, it becomes a lower body lift, tightening the abdomen, waist, outer thighs, and buttocks in a single procedure. This is often the foundational surgery in a post-weight loss surgical plan, addressing the area of greatest concern for most patients.

Thigh Lift

A thigh lift (thighplasty) removes excess skin from the inner and/or outer thighs. Incisions may be placed in the groin crease, along the inner thigh, or over the hip for outer thigh contouring. The result is a smoother, more proportionate thigh contour with improved comfort in clothing and during activity.

Bra-Line Back Lift

This procedure targets excess skin and fat deposits on the upper and mid-back that are left after weight loss. Using an incision placed along the natural bra line, the surgeon can remove the excess skin and tighten the back, with the resulting scar concealed beneath a bra strap.

Brachioplasty (Arm Lift)

Brachioplasty removes loose, hanging skin from along the inner upper arm, often called a “bat wing,” that develops after significant weight loss and as part of the natural aging process. The incision is placed along the inner arm and, when necessary, may extend toward the armpit or chest wall. Dr. Holly Wall uses nerve- and lymphatic-preserving dissection techniques to minimize postoperative swelling and protect long-term arm function. She also incorporates Brijjit® Force-Modulating Tissue Bridges that eliminate tension on the incisions to minimize scarring.

Breast Lift

Weight loss commonly leaves the breasts sagging and deflated. A breast lift (mastopexy) tightens lax skin, reshapes the breasts and areolas, and elevates them to a more youthful position on the chest. Patients who desire fullness can combine their breast lift with implants. Dr. Holly Wall and Dr. Wall Jr. co-pioneered a footprint-elevating mastopexy-augmentation technique they teach to surgeons worldwide that enhances breast shape and upper pole fullness with long-lasting results.

Male Chest Contouring

After weight loss, men may be left with excess skin and residual fullness across the chest, which can cause them to feel self-conscious. Male chest contouring may involve removal of excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue, as well as SAFELipo® contouring to restore a flatter, more masculine chest profile. Dr. Wall Jr. is a global educator on male chest shaping and approaches these cases with careful attention to preserving masculine contours and camouflaging the scars rather than simply reducing volume.

SAFELipo®

Our surgeons frequently incorporate SAFELipo®, the three-stage liposuction technique invented by Dr. Wall Jr., into body contouring after weight loss to reduce pockets of residual fat, smooth transitions between treated zones, and refine the overall silhouette. Unlike standard liposuction, SAFELipo® uses a separation-aspiration-equalization sequence that produces smoother, more even results without relying on heat. The Surgery

Our surgeons perform post-weight loss surgery using general anesthesia in our private, on-site QUAD A-accredited, state licensed, and Medicare certified surgical facility. During the operation, the surgeon removes excess fat and skin to smooth out contours. Great care is taken to minimize scarring and place incisions where they will be covered by clothing whenever possible.

Patients have the option of staying in our private, on-site, luxury guest suites before and after their procedures under the care of one of our private nurses.
