A Beautiful Boost From a Breast Lift

Breast implants or breast lift? Or both? Dr. Simeon Wall Jr. and Dr. Holly Casey Wall discuss why it makes sense to combine breast augmentation with a breast lift.

Who Needs It

Women who have had children and want breast implants to restore volume lost after pregnancy and breastfeeding often need to combine breast augmentation with a lift. Patients who have had significant weight loss, or older patients who are now seeing the effects of time and gravity, can often get the results they want by combining a breast lift with implants, especially if they want a fuller look in the upper portion of their breasts. Additionally, there are many women who have significant breast asymmetry or problems with the shape of their breasts who will benefit from combining breast lift with augmentation.

Women who want to significantly increase the size of their breasts through augmentation, but choose not to get a lift, may not gain the fullness where they want it, lessening their satisfaction with an augmentation alone. In most cases, breast implants add volume, but won't lift the breasts or create a perkier shape.

Important factors that our surgeons consider when assessing whether you should get a breast lift with implants include:

  • The quality of your skin
  • The direction the nipples point and their position on the breast
  • Where the breasts sit on the chest and how much skin hangs over the breast crease

"A lot of times after finding out exactly what someone wants to achieve, we'll come up with a different plan than they thought they were going to get when they came in."
- Dr. Simeon Wall Jr.

Case 62: Breast Augmentation with Lift

This patient wanted larger breasts with more upper pole fullness, but already had too much sagging of the breasts for a breast augmentation alone.  She required a breast lift with augmentation. The scars will continue to fade with time.

Case 194: Breast Augmentation with Lift

This patient wanted a breast lift to tighten the skin and raise the nipple. She wanted to add an implant to achieve a small amount of upper breast fullness but did not want to increase her cup size.  This breast lift with implants was performed at our Louisiana plastic surgery center.

Case 195: Breast Augmentation with Lift

After breast feeding two children this patient had slight asymmetry and sag.  She wanted to increase her cup size from a B to a Full C, small D.  This patient underwent a tummy tuck as well.  This procedure was done at our Louisiana plastic surgery center in Shreveport, Louisiana

Case 200: Breast Augmentation with Lift

This Breast Lift was performed at our Louisiana Plastic Surgery Center in Shreveport, Louisiana.  This 32 year old patient lost 60 lbs the good old fashioned way:  Diet and exercise!  She presented with droopy 42DD breasts with significant volume asymmetry.  She desired a symmetrical D cup.  Because of her volume difference, we chose saline implants.  Saline implants are adjustable in surgery and allow for better symmetry in those patients that have very different breasts.  I placed 625 cc in her left breast and removed 361 grams of skin and breast tissue.  On the right, I placed a 600 cc saline implant and removed 418 grams of skin and breast tissue.  Her result is impressive not only in her symmetry, but in the height on her chest.  She also underwent a well-deserved tummy tuck at the same time.  She is ecstatic!

Case 207: Breast Augmentation with Lift

This 46 year old woman actually had breast augmentation and breast lift in 2004 with poor results.  She had 375 cc saline implants placed at her first surgery.  Her breasts STILL drooped over her implants and had a long shape.  She also did not like the size of her large areolas.  We discussed her options and she wanted to change to the cohesive gel implants with another lift, reducing the size of her areolas.  I placed 450 cc moderate profile Gel implants subpectorally with a lift.  On the left side, I removed 252 grams of skin and breast tissue.  On the right breast, I removed 236 grams of skin and breast tissue.  She is ecstatic now.  This procedure was performed at our certified Plastic Surgery center located in Shreveoport, Louisiana.

Case 209: Breast Augmentation with Lift

This 29 year old patient had 2 children which she breastfed.  She wanted her perky firm, pre-children, breasts back!  She chose to have a breast augmentation with the cohesive gel implants combined with a mastopexy.  Now she looks better than before babies!  This procedure was done at our fully certified plastic surgery center located in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Case 211: Breast Augmentation with Lift

This 33 year old woman suffered with significant breast asymmetry, making it very difficult to buy bras or wear swimsuits.  She had 4 children which she breastfed.  I performed an augmentation with breast lift to improve her symmetry.  In these type of presentations, saline implants are wonderful to get good volume symmetry.  Because they are filled once they are inside of the patient, it is much easier to determine the right volume.  On the right, she has 500 cc and on the left breast 450 ccs.  I removed only 16 grams of breast tissue from the right and 75 grams from the left breast.  Now she is a pretty 36 D and looks amazing in a swimsuit!  This breast lift was performed at our certified surgery center located in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Case 256: Breast Augmentation with Lift

This 28 year old woman wanted her 34 B breasts to be a full C or small D, and to not sag.  She had 3 children and had breast fed them all.  To achieve her goal, I placed 380cc moderate profile Sientra cohesive gel implants in addition to a breast lift.  Her post op result here is 14 months after surgery.

Case 257: Breast Augmentation with Lift

This 43 year old woman wanted to upsize her 38C cup breasts to a DD.  She wanted a lot of cleavage and height on her chest.  To achieve her goals, I placed Mentor 550cc high profile gel implants in addition to a breast lift.  She is 5 months post op with her goals attained.

Case 259: Breast Augmentation with Lift

This 41 year old woman had droopy 36C cup breasts.  She wanted to be slightly larger, but higher on her chest.  I placed 380cc moderate profile Sientra cohesive gel implants, along with a breast lift to achieve this full, natural-looking result.

Case 317: Breast Augmentation with Lift

This is a 27 year old woman who had one child and breastfed.  She wanted to be a full D again and enjoy upper pole fullness and improve her asymmetry.  She chose saline implants and a breast lift to achieve her goals.

Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your results may vary.

Preparing for a Breast Lift With Implants

An important part of the consultation process is describing your cosmetic goals to your surgeon. Based on those goals and a thorough physical exam, the surgeon recommends an approach that should produce results that look great for years to come. That philosophy limits your chances of having to undergo another surgery in just a few years.

Our surgeons also help you choose the size and type of breast implants that will work best for you. You can preview what the results may look like using the VECTRA® 3-D Imaging system.

The Surgery

Advanced technology and the superior surgical techniques used by our surgeons at The Wall Center minimize the scarring that causes the most anxiety for patients who are combining a breast lift with implants. Advanced silicone gel formulations can also help make incision lines barely visible.

A breast lift with augmentation is usually performed under general anesthesia. Our surgeons use the short scar breast lift technique in almost all cases (also called the vertical or lollipop lift), where the incision is made around the areola and then straight down to the breast crease. This technique eliminates the long scar that runs along the breast crease and creates a better contoured breast shape compared to the traditional anchor-shaped incision.

The surgeon inserts the breast implants through this incision and places them so they are centered around the nipple. Incisions are then sutured and bandaged. The bandages are replaced by a surgical bra after a few days, providing ample support to protect your breast shape.

Rapid Recovery & Results

The breast lift procedure itself doesn't typically produce more discomfort during your recovery than what is normally expected after getting our rapid recovery breast augmentation by itself. The same rapid recovery protocols are used for our breast lift with implants patients, with most patients being able to return to most typical activities the day after surgery. Strenuous work with the chest muscles is avoided for 4 weeks after surgery, but most patients are able to resume exercising just 2 weeks after their surgery. Due to the meticulous way the surgery is performed, most patients experience little to no bruising. Swelling of the breasts usually resolves within 2 weeks, but the implants typically take weeks or months to fully settle into the perfect position, with the goal of long-lasting results and a very low reoperative rate.

In borderline cases, getting a breast lift along with implants can extend your results for many more years than what could be expected with only breast augmentation. These decisions are important and our surgeons are committed to finding the solution that will work best for each individual patient.
