Plastic Surgeons Use 3D Imaging for Patients
By Jessica Crandall
A group of plastic surgeons is making big strides when it comes to technology.
Shreveport, Louisiana (February 2014) — The Wall Center on Fern avenue in Shreveport is offering patients a 3D look at themselves post surgery.
It's a way for doctors and patients to agree on exactly what they want the outcome to be.
At first glance it looks like he's setting up a video game. But within minutes, Dr. Mike Lee is able to do a side-by-side comparison of how a woman's breasts will look before and after augmentation.
"It's hard sometimes to communicate the changes that you are going to make surgically. If you have a visual aid, then that just reinforces the communication between the doctor and the patient," said Lee.
The Vectra 3D Imaging system makes it all possible, and not just for breast surgery, but for rhinoplasty.
"There's a lot of ethnic preferences to those surgeries and this is just another avenue of communicating with the patient and making sure that everybody is in agreement," said Lee.
To get the image, a patient steps up in front of a 3D camera as it flashes.
Lee had me step in for an image. Within just a few minutes of taking it, the computer renders a 3D model that he can then manipulate.
Lee hopes to see this technology branch out into imaging for reconstructive surgery in the future.
"I think there's a lot of benefit there, but there's still some things to work out with that," said Lee.
Vectra can create 3D imaging for any body part.
